Micron or Micron:
Diameter is known as “fineness” and its unit of measurement is microns, which express the diameter of the fiber. A micron is equal to one thousandth of a millimeter. The finer the wool, the lower the micron value.
Types of Sheep:
There are sheep specialized in wool production, meat production, and dual-purpose (used for both purposes). Wool breeds have a high wool production (5 to 8 kilos), which is of good quality and fineness (23 to 25 microns or even less). Among them, the Australian Merino breed is the most recognized in the world because it produces a very fine fiber (16 to 20 microns). Meat breeds grow faster – being larger animals at the same age than other breeds – presenting leaner meat, but they have a low wool production (2 to 4 kilos) and less fineness (32 to 35 microns or even more). In the central area of Chile, the Suffolk Down breed is the most representative within this group.
Australian Merino : Wool sheep
Suffolk Down: Meat sheep Dual-purpose breeds are not specialized in the production of meat or wool, being rather used for both purposes, so they produce intermediate values for both characteristics. In Chile, the most important breeds within this group are the Corriedale and the Romney Marsh.
